More work is not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on the answer to the following two questions.
1. Do you have hard access to the database for modifying salary figures/entries?
2. At the same time, are you able to cover up the audit trail on such modifications?
If the answers are yes and yes, then voila, set.
If not, then yeah, more work sucks.
