last minute tax filing

28 Apr 2007

Heh.

Every single year I’d submit my tax forms on the very last day. Today’s Saturday, so that’d be 2 more days. A lot of time by my standards, but I was a tad worried a while ago when I realised there are no PDF auto-calculating versions of the BE form this year. And I was mainly freaking out because I only found out just before I had to send my brother to class, and if I decided to go register for e-Filing I might have to drive all the way to Kelana Jaya across the lunch hour jam. Which I did in somewhat, since I had to go to SS4 to drop off a cheque, but having to cross the LDP was kinda frightening.

But anyways, I got home and finally opened my mailed-in BE form. And lo and behold, my e-Filing PIN was printed inside. Doh!

I’ll still need to mail in my dividend slips though.. sigh.

Just went earlier to income tax to submit my dividend slips. Had done e-filing on Thursday but they refused to accept my dividend slips. Said “no need” becase I’m showing a salary besides dividend income, therefore I don’t have to claim dividend tax returns.

Found out that they screwed up. They misread on their part “Cukai dibayar balik” (i.e. the excess tax from dividends) as “Cukai perlu dibayar”.

So went to income tax, argued my point that I’m claiming a refund and they went…oh. Okay, sorry, we made a mistake.

You might just want to drive over to income tax today (or tomorrow), go to the inquiries section with your dividend slips to get it endorsed. They’ll take a copy of the form (HK-3) you filled in, check it versus the dividend slips, certify it and return you the original dividend slips. Time to do it? Less then 10 minutes. But thanks to the initial incompetent staff, I have to visit LHDN a second time.

Hmm, that’s one way to do it. I was just planning to go drop ’em into a collection box, which was what I did for the last two years. The originals that is, which they’d mail back to me.

Good luck submitting your tax! I’m so glad I don’t have to do it yet! 😛 Ha ha ha ha. Anyway, heard the e-filing was very mah fan @ troublesome. Betul ke?

Ah okay, if you’re comfortable with them mailing it back to you, all good. Me, I just don’t trust them to admit that they’ve received it if I don’t have an endorsed copy in return (i.e. submitting it directly versus dropping it into a collection box).

E-filing’s not bad. Fairly quick actually. If only they’d link listed company dividend vouchers with the issuing firms, then it’d be even better. Right now it’s still half manual, thus I’m not confident of receiving my refund within the minister’s stated 30 days for e-filing. Frankly, I’m not even confident of receiving the refund in anything short of a 6 month period.
