Savory Cheese Bread

19 Aug 2020

Recipes from the King Arthur Flour website often call for cheese powder and I got quite curious about it, so I bought some from the recent Lazada 8.8. sale. I bought extra to get Free Shipping, so I was very eager to start using up this new ingredient.

This Savory Cheese Bread recipe from King Arthur Flour website was originally written for a Zojirushi breadmaker, and I’ve rewritten it for use in my Kenwood BM450 breadmaker.

The bread had a wonderful cheese aroma, which wafted through my kitchen as it baked in the machine. It was also so flavorful, Mummy thought it was full of butter. “Smells like roti paung,” she said. So if you want a bread recipe which is beautifully soft and has all the rich yumminess of butter for half the calories, this is the one to go for!

Can’t wait to use this bread for my grilled cheese sandwiches. Enjoy!

Updated with alternative ingredients measurements suitable for use in a Panasonic SD-P104WSK breadmaker. Add all the dry ingredients except the yeast to the machine, followed by cold milk and tabasco sauce, if using. Add the yeast into the yeast dispenser, and use the Basic bread setting (Program 1) with a Light crust.

Savory Cheese Bread

Ingredients

  • 230 ml (230 grams) | 160 grams full cream milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon | 3/8 teaspoon tabasco sauce (optional)
  • 360 grams | 250 grams plain/all- purpose flour (11% to 12% protein)
  • 115 grams | 80 grams extra-sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 30 grams | 20 grams cheddar cheese powder OR grated parmesan
  • 1 tablespoon (14 grams) | 10 grams sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons (10 grams) | 6 grams salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons | 1 teaspoon instant yeast

Directions

In your breadmaker pan, add the milk and tabasco sauce.

Add the flour, cheddar, cheese powder or parmesan, sugar, salt and yeast.

Transfer the pan to your machine, and select the Basic White program, for a 500-gram loaf with Light crust. Start the machine.

After about 10 minutes of kneading, check the dough. The dough should have come together in a ball and be slightly sticky. Add additional or milk if necessary. I personally didn’t need to.

After the program has finished, remove the loaf from the pan and let cool on a wire rack, at least 30 minutes.

Slice and enjoy!
