Ramadan in Malaysia is always synonymous with Ramadan food bazaars. Everyone would flock to their neigborhood bazaar in the late afternoons to grab all sorts of food, appetizers, desserts, rice dishes, just name it. Malaysia being a multi-ethnic country, even non-Muslims look forward to Ramadan food bazaars for the variety of options offered.
The downside of these bazaars is the insane crowds and the nightmare it is to find parking. My entire family are introverts, so we usually give Ramadan bazaars a hard pass. We still want to enjoy more special meals when breaking fast, and since we get off work an hour early during the entire fasting month, I usually have extra time to make something special, either a fancy rice dish or a tasty snack on the side. For suhoor (our pre-dawn meal), typically I’d be too groggy to eat an elaborate meal of rice with multiple dishes, plus my stomach wouldn’t even be awake yet to receive much food. So I usually also make easy-to-eat, nutritious dishes for suhoor enough to keep our energy up during the day.
Here are the recipes I’ve made so far during Ramadan, for both breaking fast as well as for suhoor, in case you need some ideas when putting together your daily Ramadan menu.
