temerloh

after you travel, you usually describe the sights, and stuff that make a place special. for places in malaysia, it’s usually food!

same goes for this quaint little town in Pahang called Temerloh. takes 2 hours to get here from KL northwards via highway, and i can talk abt it being next to the huge Sungai Pahang, but it’s not that much of a deal.

the best thing about Temerloh is its specialty dish: Ikan Patin Gulai Tempoyak! we found this nice place next to the river, and next to a sewing shop, that serves this every lunch hour.

ikan patin is basically a type of fish that’s quite big and can be found in this river. some of us call it a naughty fish cuz it eats everything, hence its size. you usually find its meat steamed or simmered, never fried, cuz it’s too soft and flaky.

tempoyak is fermented durian. durian is the king of fruits here in malaysia, for taste and ‘nasal impression’. tempoyak tastes great, especially with sambal belacan. but for most, it’s an acquired taste.

ikan patin + tempoyak = bliss. every time i balik kampung to Raub for a kenduri, they’ll always have it! and here in Temerloh is where the main ingredient comes from. our group of 6 cleaned out 3 bowls of it. should’ve eaten more, cuz now that i’m back, i yearn for more…

world without warcraft

Saturday
Cuzzies!
WoW
Marche`

cuzzies and relatives visited from Singapore, and we had fun with the limited time we had. loitered around in the morning having breakfast, reading, and chatting before they had to leave for a wedding. spent some time then doing SFK. at night we younglings spread our wings and flew to The Curve for good overordered food and shopping. got myself a book for my upcoming roadshow. the rosti at Marche is good as usual, but the beef pepperoni sausages were a bit too much. sauteed mushrooms also ftw.

Sunday
Cuzzies!
Briyani
Star Movies

traveling day. could only spend the morning with my relatives and cute cuddly niece. by 12.30 Sue picked me up to go to the office, and then to Haz’s housewarming in Puchong. she had hired our usual office caterers, Asyura; they make a mean briyani. there were also sweet butterfly-decorated cupcakes, and moist choc cake. and those prawn crisps junk food we used to eat when we were young. πŸ™‚

after eating we headed on to Muar for the first day of the roadshow on Monday. the group was feeling too lazy to go out and look for Mee Bandung, so we just had Kak Ita’s leftover mee goreng that her mom had made. i was planning to read the books i brought but there were good shows on tube, e.g. the original Poseidon, and National Treasure. oh, and we stayed at the Classic Hotel. rooms were great since they were recently refurbished.

Monday
The Giver
Academy Awards

started reading The Giver, which i found resting on a bookshelf at home. i’d always wanted to buy this, but i guess i don’t have to now. πŸ™‚ by this time, we were already in Melaka, staying at this old hotel called Emperor. it’s so old, the elevator buttons reminded me of the ones you might see in black and white movies. creepy place.

there wasn’t much on TV too, except for the Academy Awards. NTV7 did a great injustice to viewers by mutilating the show. what’s the point of watching if you can’t catch the presenters’ jokes and the performances lined up in between? argh. luckily we got a somewhat-stable tranmission of Singapore’s channel 5. but they only started at 10pm, and we were really sleepy by the time they got to best actress in a leading role.

at least i finished the book. hate these kind of endings.

Tuesday
Discovery Channel
Belgariad: Pawn of Prophecy
Newsweek

we’re in PD now, staying at our company condo. nice place, well maintained. has a nice pool, and it’s right next to the beach. but no, none of us got ourselves wet, except for Sue on Sunday morning. i might be imagining it, but the PD beaches seem a little cleaner than before.

wasn’t much on TV except a special on volcanoes on Discovery. HBO was showing crappy old movies. so it was back to reading. finished the 1st book of the Belgariad, which i bought on saturday. it didn’t have an ending, so i guess i’ll have to get the other 4 books. πŸ˜›

Wednesday

i’m hoping to WoW a lot today. πŸ˜›

wow food

aka WoW and Food.

WoW: reactivated my account on Saturday. was too lazy to go pick up my code from Az, and had him give me my Burning Crusade (BC) key instead, but as it turned out I need the BC CDs to access the BC content. so it was more Oblivion for that day.

picked up the CDs on Sunday after an outing with Fish and Zoe. started installing it immediately when i got home, and had it going while i mopped the apartment floor. rolled a fresh new blood elf priest this time, with the standard red hair, on Tichondrius, where Fuzzy, Raptor, & Loafer plays. but of course, i prolly won’t see them so soon, since they’re level 60+ and all. πŸ˜›

and the blood elf is female this time. forget the social quirks, i just wanna play the game. and there are a lot of guys out there who can’t resist helping sexy female characters. πŸ˜›

Food: on Sunday, Zoe, Fish & I went out for makan2 and some other things. Fish and I were planning to get info on offered Advanced Open Water courses at 1U. Zoe joined the fray when she needed to look at some things there as well. so we were in Bangsar for breakfast, where I had 2 half boiled eggs. Then Keng San/c3l joins us for our trip to 1U.

at 1U, there were 2 dive centers, both with their… ups and downs. we’re still not sure what the plan is, because one of the shops haven’t finalised their schedules yet. we’ll probably get back to them in a week or two.

we then proceeded to Chilis for a light lunch. shared a Triple Play, Bottomless Tostada Chips w/ Beef Queso, and had a cup of Chili on the side. had probably 5 rounds of Bottomless Mango Juice.

lepas tu, singgah stationery shop, then balik. but not before stopping by Az’s place. πŸ˜€

my date with oysters.

finally, after craving for sashimi and oysters for so long, i got to have ’em today. yup yup yup. at jogoya, starhill kl.

the place wasn’t that crowded, like it was when it first opened, but my friend and friends wanted to take precautions by making reservations. (i say screw the reservations and just go there. though, perhaps for bigger parties, it would be better.)

free yee sang for a table of 8 people or more. we had to remind them, but after it came, we didn’t feel like doing the deed – no one knew the ritual or the words to go with it. anyway, it was a quiet affair (re: yee sang) and after that, no one wanted to eat it. everyone wanted to save space in their tummies for other stuff. but the sashimi in it didn’t go to waste. =)

now that i’ve been there twice, i’ve had my fill of the place, i’m done with jogoya. but for those who haven’t been there and would like to make full use of the 2-3 hours of buffet time, should do so. cheapest price of RM68++ is at 2-430pm or 930-1130pm. i think.

boyz ii men

just got back from the boyz 2 men concert at genting. it was great. although i should’ve prepared myself by listening to some of their songs before going, cuz i couldn’t follow the lyrics to most of their songs. shawn stockman cried while performing “color of love”. but we probably won’t find out why.
and….. hannah tan was there. mmmm… she was wearing this white dress that was just… *gasp*. we bumped into her on the way to the arena of stars, and it was nice having her in your sight all along the way. i only realised later that harith iskandar was with her. πŸ˜›

and… i can say it was also a day of food. marmalade lunch with yvonne, where i had the spaghetti funghi, altho i’d say i prefer the smoked salmon i had before, and a fruit shake. then roti telur from the mamak near merv’s shop, then 2 scoops of baskin robbins’ strawberry cheesecake on a waffle cone. finished with a sirap limau aisΒ  at mahbub.

boon tat

note to self: directions to boon tat seafood restaurant: head towards port klang from klang, turn left at the port klang futsal center into pandamaran (may have to slip into the side road before the turn). after the light, instead of curving left along the road, take an illegal right into the housing area. break through, and there it is at the end.

must bring hokkien (well, at least canto)-speaking friend. πŸ˜›

*drool* crabs. fish. oysters. it was great. awesome. but the 6 of us – me, my mom, uncle jimmy, simon, patrizia & valeria – still couldn’t finish all those dishes.

spicy chili crabs, then tomato/sweet-hot crabs, then salt-fried prawns, then oyster omellette, then fishcake wrapped back in its own skin, then pomfret in mee hoon and soup. woooo bliss!

pictures later. πŸ˜€

squisito!

valeria and patrizia treated us to a wonderful italian dinner tonight. we were at patrizia’s place at the corinthian, whose penthouse had a great view of KLCC.

appetizers were bruschettas (sche actually pronounced with a hard ke instead of a shh), with tuna spread, butter, the tomato salsa thingie, and salmon slices. then we had soup with chickpeas imported from italy. πŸ˜›

main course was pasta ala homemade pesto, which you can taste the basil because it’s freshly made. and with it came the best lasagna i’ve ever had in my entire life. the texture, the restraint in the taste, was just perfect. gratzi, valeria. squisito!

then we had this eggplant thingie.. and then this calf thingie.. man, my short term memory’s shot. : i remember dessert tho… pears with gorgonzola and walnuts. and valeria’s own homemade tiramisu. it’s rare to find tiramisu made by actual italians. πŸ™‚

at the table were me, my mom, my aunt cyn, uncle jimmy, his son simon, valeria and patrizia. simon was the heart of the party, with his seemingly endless knowledge of food from around the world. you know as they say, food is a universal language. we talked about raw urchins, chou tofu, canoli, tempoyak, etc. yeah, the full spectrum.

and this to be continued next week with pandamaran seafood. XD

downtime

ah, something tripped the power at the apartment while i was out, and i forgot to tell the folks to turn the server back on after they reset the circuit braker.

this happened when i went out with fish for dinner. we were planning a budget dinner, not more than rm20 per person, but ended up going to sushi king at section 14. we took our time and had a great meal, getting 2 temaki’s free from a promotion (buy 1 get 1 free). the unagi temaki is classic, whereas the sake kawa temaki was crunchy and dry. almost like a soft shell crab, but not quite.

the bill came to a surprising rm35. i didn’t realise it at first, but after recounting items in the car, it turns out they forgot to include the temaki’s. well, lucky us. πŸ™‚

after that was continuation of mahjong, which we started halfheartedly due to a korean movie being played on the dvd player (please teach me english). then, supposedly, holy hour started and i started winning. πŸ˜›

anyways, for james: 2x 7950GX2 vs 1x 8800GTX. seems that SLI isn’t an upgrade path.. *ponders*. anyways just google it and you’ll find lotsa discussions abt it.
